The Lake Michigan Electric Vehicle Circuit

A new proposal announced in late 2021 by Governor Gretchen Whitmer aims to reduce anxieties about electric vehicle range with new electric vehicle charging stations on Michigan’s western coast. Known as the Lake Michigan Electric Vehicle Circuit, Whitmer’s ambitious plan is to create “the best new road trip for electric vehicle owners in America.”

For EV drivers, that means freedom to explore local lighthouses, parks, and businesses without worrying about where to charge! What’s more, the Department of Energy has announced plans to add alternative fuel stations along I-94 from Michigan’s border with Canada.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy program is on board to support the plan with $1.25 million in initial funds to build out the network of new electric vehicle charging stations.

Next Steps for Fuel-Free Travel in Michigan

The Lake Michigan Electric Vehicle Circuit isn’t the only way that Michigan is planning to make EV ownership easier! Here’s what else is in the works:

• Known as M2M, the Michigan to Montana I-94 Alternative Fuel Corridor is a planned 1,500-mile route that will stretch from the Canadian border in Port Huron, Michigan to Billings, Montana. It will feature conveniently-located electric vehicle charging stations and stations that offer CNG, biofuel, and propane autogas. The addition of hydrogen stations in the future is also a possibility.
• The Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity is prepared to invest up to $5 million into providing workers with the training they need to handle the expected increase of EVs on Michigan roads.
