If you ask many Sterling Heights EV and plug-in hybrid drivers what the most significant setback is regarding being a regular EV commuter, and one of the most consistent answers is likely the lack of charging stations in rural areas. General Motors heard your cries and recently deployed its “Dealer Community Charging Program.” We’re proud to announce at Moran Chevrolet, Inc. that we’ll be kicking off the program in Clinton Township soon, providing Macomb Township and Saint Clair Shores drivers with more available charging stations in by partnering with multiple other businesses in the area.
So, how did this program get its start? About a year ago, GM announced their decision to build upwards of 40,000 AC charging stations near dealers in the US and Canada. Incredibly, in a short time, stations have already been installed in Michigan and Wisconsin.
So far, about 25% of all GM dealers in North America have signed up for this program. That’s about 1,000 locations nationwide. So, how exactly does it work, and how will it help Clinton Township drivers?
Participating dealers are eligible to receive 10 19.2 kilowatt Level 2 Charging stations. These are the quick-charging stations that take roughly 30 minutes to refill the battery on your car to 80%. After dealers decide on how many they want, GM connects the dealers with local installers, who then place the charging stations as directed by the dealership at key locations throughout the community. This is a game-changer for the availability of EV charging, as much of the nation is still underserved with regard to station accessibility. However, 90% of the country is within 10 miles or less of a GM Dealership.
By the time the program is finished, the number of available Level 2 public stations will be at double the number it currently stands.
The goal of the program is to bring EV charging to rural and suburban areas that otherwise may not have immediate access to quick charging locations. However, beneath the surface, this is all about urging dealers to connect with the community and build relationships with local businesses and the people who frequent those businesses. This is exactly why we offer programs like our Military Incentives, to give back to the members of the community who are most deserving.
This ultimately boosts the local economy and builds tighter bonds in the community between consumers and retailers. For more information on the program or to find out the potential locations for these stations, which will be open to the public, contact a team member today!
As a reminder, if you’re interested in an EV, you could still potentially qualify for tax breaks, saving you even more money.
